Privacy Policy

Sail-OS ("we", "us", "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, how we use it, and your rights under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and other applicable privacy laws.
1. Who We Are
Sail-OS is operated by Emil Niclas Hofseth, based in Oslo, Norway. For privacy inquiries, contact us at privacy@sail-os.app.
2. What Data We Collect
Account data
When you sign up, we collect your name and email address via our authentication provider (Clerk). This is necessary to create and maintain your account.
Vessel and parts data
You voluntarily enter information about your boat(s), including parts, maintenance records, expenses, and engine hours. This data is yours — you create it, you control it.
Usage data
We collect basic analytics about how you use the app (pages visited, features used, session duration) to improve the product. This data is aggregated and does not personally identify you.
Payment data
If you subscribe to a paid plan, payment processing is handled entirely by Stripe. We never see or store your credit card number. We receive only a confirmation of payment status and your Stripe customer ID.
Affiliate click data
When you click a product suggestion link to a marine retailer, the click is tracked by the affiliate network (see Section 6). This tracking uses the affiliate network's cookies, not ours.

4. How We Use Aggregated Data
Sail-OS uses aggregated, anonymized data from all users to improve lifecycle predictions. For example, if 200 users with the same engine report replacing their impeller at a similar interval, we use that pattern to improve predictions for everyone.
This aggregated data:
- Is never sold as individual user data
- Is anonymized — it cannot be traced back to you or your boat
- May in the future be shared with manufacturers or insurers in aggregate form (e.g., "median impeller life across 500 boats is 4.2 years") to improve part quality and pricing
- You can opt out of aggregated data contribution in your account settings
5. Our Service Providers
We use the following third-party services to operate Sail-OS:

All providers are bound by data processing agreements. For transfers outside the EU/EEA, we rely on Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) or equivalent safeguards.
6. Affiliate Links & Commercial Recommendations
Sail-OS may suggest products (replacement parts, maintenance supplies) and link to marine retailers such as Seatronic, West Marine, SVB, and others. These links contain affiliate tracking parameters.
What this means for you:
- When you click a product link and make a purchase, we may earn a small commission (typically 2-15% of the sale price)
- This does not increase the price you pay — the retailer pays the commission
- We always show both OEM and aftermarket alternatives — we do not prioritize higher-commission products
- Product suggestions are based on your boat's actual parts and maintenance schedule, not advertising spend
- You are never required to purchase through our links
Affiliate tracking is handled by third-party networks (Adtraction, AvantLink) using their own cookies. See their privacy policies for details.
7. Cookies
Sail-OS itself uses only essential cookies required for authentication and session management. We do not use advertising cookies or tracking pixels.
When you click an affiliate link, the destination retailer and affiliate network may set their own cookies. These are governed by their respective privacy policies.
8. Your Rights (GDPR)
As an EU/EEA resident, you have the right to:
- Access — Request a copy of all personal data we hold about you
- Rectification — Correct inaccurate data
- Erasure — Request deletion of your account and all associated data ("right to be forgotten")
- Portability — Export your vessel data in a machine-readable format
- Restriction — Limit how we process your data
- Objection — Object to processing based on legitimate interest
- Withdraw consent — Where processing is based on consent, withdraw it at any time
To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@sail-os.app. We will respond within 30 days.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Norwegian Data Protection Authority (Datatilsynet) at datatilsynet.no.
9. Data Retention
- Active accounts: Data is retained as long as your account is active
- Deleted accounts: All personal data and vessel data is deleted within 30 days of account deletion. Anonymized aggregate data (used for predictions) is retained.
- Payment records: Retained for 5 years as required by Norwegian accounting law (bokforingsloven)
10. Data Security
All data is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.3) and at rest. Access to production systems is restricted to authorized personnel. We perform regular security reviews of our infrastructure and dependencies.
11. Children
Sail-OS is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated via email or an in-app notification. The "last updated" date at the top reflects the most recent revision.
